1. To solve deficiencies in insulation
Our customer contacted us because he felt his heating bills were too high. And with good reason! According to our statistics and Hydro-Québec data, our customer was paying almost 50% more in energy costs than a standard house of the same year of construction. After a blower door test, our advisor quickly realized that the problem wasn’t airtightness. So he turns to insulation!
Using the thermal imaging camera, he identified certain areas in the basement walls where the insulation was, to say the least, inadequate. In fact, an entire wall section had not been insulated.

2. To get rid of a major water leak
Finding the point of origin of water infiltration is no easy task, and this is even more true when the walls are completed, making it impossible to see inside the wall cavity. To avoid having to open up entire sections of our customer’s wall, our experts used thermography and… a garden hose!
By generously spraying the exterior, our experts reproduced the conditions present during water infiltration. Equipped with a thermal imaging camera, they then followed the path of the water, since evaporation causes a thermal difference that can be read by the camera. In this way, they were able to identify the origin of the problem more easily and, above all, minimize damage to interior finishes, much to our customer’s delight.
3. To rectify a serious air leakage situation
Following an energy assessment, our customer carried out sealing work around the doors and windows as mentioned in his report. However, to his dismay, his air change rate per hour – an important indicator of inadequate sealing in this case – remained very high. So he decided to investigate further, calling in our cause-finding department!
Thanks to infiltrography, the simultaneous use of a blower door meter and a thermal imaging camera, our expert is able to identify an impressive number of openings here and there in the building envelope. The data collected with our instruments even allows us to assert that if all the openings were in the same place, it would represent the equivalent of a permanently open window… That’s something!
The use of a thermal imaging camera can be very useful for a wide range of building problems. However, when it comes to finding a thermographer, beware: many have the tool, but not the training to use it properly… After all, let’s not lose sight of the fact that a thermal camera isn’t magic, and can’t see inside walls. So, in all cases, it will be necessary to open the door to confirm the source of the problem.
So, whatever the nature of your problem, don’t fall for it. Contact us and make sure you get the right service for your situation.
